Hi All, Hope anyone that reads this is well *smile*. I originally posted this on my other blog but...after reading it over decided the best place for this post is here.
It's a little negative but guess it will be right at home here *smile*. I wrote the poem this morning followed by a 'long' explanation as to why I wrote it...here goes.
Obsessed
Obsessed with the media
In all of its glory
The more negative the info
The better the story
Balance is now gone
As evil comes to the fore
Sensationalism rules
As the fashion is gore
I turn on my TV
And everywhere I see
Negative stories
Stare back at me!
Whether news, entertainment
No matter the station
They vie for attention
The next revelation!
You’ll be hard pressed
To find yourself a story
The heart-warming kind
The one with real glory
The one that gives goose bumps
Maybe even a tear
Now classed as ‘cheesy’
Most now concerned with fear!
Factual or fiction
They impress upon your brain
Whether you agree or not
Negativity now reign’s!

I wrote the above after waking up this morning thinking about a tv series I follow, Heroes. I recorded and watched the latest episode last night.
In that episode, Sylar, the most evil of the Heroes (Yep, evil is now heroic!) rescued and residing at a carnival full of evil heroes, is advised to enter the hall of mirrors to regain his memory. (the evil leader doesn’t know at this point that Sylar has switched bodies with another hero, a supposedly good one…though that is debateable considering some of his past antics!) The idea behind the exercise, to regain his lost memories and at the same time, kill, a police officer who is on his trail.
What disturbed me most about this episode…and I did find it disturbing…is the fact that, even though I watched it late afternoon yesterday, it was on my mind when I woke this morning!
Then I suddenly realised that every programme I watch at the moment is the same!
Even Eastenders…the only soap I watch! There’s betrayal, murder, sexual preference etc…
When Heroes the series first appeared on my TV, I loved it! This last series, unfortunately, has joined the rest of TV hell and now features more baddies than goodies!
What I discovered was, no matter what I watch at the moment it either includes explicit nudity and sex, murder, violence, horror or all them! True blood for instance (btw we’ve now gone vampire happy!) of which the storyline I find very good encapsulates all four of the above! Unfortunately some of the scenes are way too disturbing for me…after the first few episodes I stopped watching it!
Oh and the reality shows don’t trail far behind…XFactor or Britains got Talent for instance, though two of my favourite programmes, sensationalises ridiculing the contestants! Those contestants are auditioned ‘before’ they come before the judges. You know what that means don’t you? That means the producers sort out the ones they can ‘literally’ have the most fun with and ridicule! Very bad taste indeed!
I don’t even want to go down the Big Brother road at all!
Then we have comedy what’s happened to that? Where’s the comedy in Eastenders these days?…and all this is entertainment? Give me a break! I have a TV, to entertain me, to escape from reality for a short time…I have all the reality I need in my personal life and…if I really need jolting…the news. Even that is sensationalised!
I don’t read newspapers anymore…why…because most of the time they wouldn’t know the truth if it smacked them in the mouth!
The point is, I’m being brainwashed, we all are! Anyone who works in the media who says that what they report or produce does not affect the public is lying! Lying through their back teeth! If the public weren’t affected…no newspapers would be sold…no Dvd’s or Cd’s would be sold…no magazines…no reality TV shows would rake in their phone in money…in fact we are so brainwashed we have MPs and the media telling us what we want…what we need…and who we should or shouldn’t be!
All of the above dictate our lives…they dictate how we should feel…how we should behave…while at the same time corrupting us while they rake in the money. Hell we’re gullible!
You may think I’m over reacting…am I really? Think hard about what you listen to…what you watch and what you buy, THEN tell me that none of that influences you!
Anyone in advertising knows the power of the mind…they also know how to misuse that power to sell their product…if they didn’t they wouldn’t pay all that money for advertising! Newspapers do exactly the same…though the internet has now grabbed some of their glory!
To make my point…am I coming over as prudish? I’m actually quite broad minded! The thing is though…no matter what it is; I believe you have to draw a line somewhere. If you don’t well, need I spell it out?
I’m seriously concerned about what we are exposed to…especially our children. Yes there are some things that need bringing to the publics attention…I have no problem with that at all! What I have a problem with is ‘how’ it’s reported in some instances. I also, stating the obvious here, have a problem with the influence of shows like those mentioned above. It’s becoming a case of anything goes…what else can we think of to shock! Gees there’s some sick minds out there! And as long as people seem interested in this stuff…i.e. no complaints, switch over…though sometimes what to I don’t know! Then they’ll keep inundating us with it!
If you’ve bothered to read thus far just do something for me will you? Think of anything you watch, read or listen to…anything at all that draws your attention whether it be the internet, a newspaper a TV show or even that billboard you passed earlier!
Now really think about it…whatever it is can you honestly say that it’s not affected you in some way? What that affect is, is not the point I’m trying to make here…though it is the most crucial part of my contribution here. The whole point of the exercise is that whatever your reaction is, it’s impacted on your brain!
That is what the media is all about…there is nothing more powerful than the power of suggestion…and boy don’t the media know this!
The pun used to be…Sex sells…now it’s…Negativity sells!
I rest my case!
